Doubles Plus One

1/31/2016

We are building upon our doubles facts in math by learning the doubles plus one.  The doubles plus one is an addition strategy in which we add one more to each side of the equals sign. So, knowing that 4 + 4 = 8, we can easily determine that 4 + 5 = 9!

We are working hard practicing this new strategy by using manipulatives, playing games, and doing activities!

Inspired by Grace Lin's book, Fortune Cookie Fortunes, we wrote our own fortunes to put inside "cookies" in class today!  We were surprised to learn that fortune cookies were invented here in the United States.  They are truly a Chinese American food.

This week we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream to make the world a more peaceful place. We read two biographies about Dr. King and watched a part of his famous speech, I Have a Dream. We thought Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream to live in a world where all people are treated fairly and equally made him a kind man.

The boys and girls each wrote a dream they have that would help to make the world a better place. Students then did an art project using paper collage to make a portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Be sure to listen to your child's blog to hear his/her dream and see his/her artwork!

We are comparing our lives here in Brookline with those of children in Beijing, China.  By reading the amazing book, One Year in Beijing, we are learning what boys and girls our age do in China throughout the year.  We then write about what children do each month in both countries.  It is fun to notice our similarities and differences.

We are learning how to write persuasive pieces in writer's workshop. We evaluated collections of items from home and picked our favorite.  Then, we began writing which we liked best and why.  We are doing a great job with this work!
