The award-winning author and illustrator, Grace Lin, visited Baker School this past week thanks to the generosity of our PTO. Grace taught the entire first grade about the book making process from initial idea to published work. Perhaps some of our students will grow up to follow in her footsteps!

1R students wrote letters to the President of the United States telling what they thought was the best part of his job. Some included drawings of President Obama as well. We hope to get a reply soon!
We loved solving story problems featuring dinosaurs this week. From eating donuts to taking dance lessons, the dinos kept us pretty busy with their various adventures!
Take a look at the 1R students performing the doubles chant with choreography they designed themselves! This is such a fun way to practice these important math facts.
We learned about the Seal of the President of the United States and the symbols contained within it. Then, the children designed their own Seals of the First Grade, including at least 3 symbols of their choice!
We loved Skyping with first graders in Maui, Hawaii! We asked one another about our classrooms, schools and weather. We learned lots of fun facts about one another. Students in Hawaii can wear shorts all year long, and their school is very close to the beach. We wanted to jump through the computer and visit!
The students love to have Secret Readers visit 1R to share some of their family's favorite picture books!
Our Secret Reader showed the class his native country, Canada, on our classroom map. We loved hearing about how cold it is there in the winter.
