We enjoyed reading the book, Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. The author tells the story of where snowmen go at night when we are sleeping! Students had fun imagining where their snowmen might go and the things they might do! We had snowmen swimming to Asia, sledding off roofs and taking ball room dancing classes! We wrote down our creative ideas and made artwork using different techniques for the hallway. Counting coinsWe began learning about coins this week! 1R students practiced counting pennies and nickels. We worked together as a whole class to find out how many cents we had with different combinations of coins. Students then worked in partners to create and count new combinations. We learned strategies to help us count quickly!

We learned all about the Statue of Liberty, an important American symbol of freedom. To understand just how big the statue is, we cut a piece of yarn 25 feet long and then laid it out in the hallway. We found out that it is even longer than our 1R class line!! We also learned how to draw the Statue of Liberty and did a piece of writing about it. We discussed an interesting fact we learned and why we think the statue is a good symbol. |

We created symmetrical paper snowflakes with our KP Partner Pals. 1R students helped the kindergartners to build them from the center outwards, being careful to use as many shapes as possible. They did a wonderful job!
| We began learning about even and odd numbers by reading the delightful book, Even Steven and Odd Todd. Then, we discovered a "handy" trick for determining if a number is even or odd. We take the digit in the ones place of the number and build it with our fingers. We then match up our fingers to see if each one has a partner or not. If all fingers have a partner, the number is even. If not, it is odd! We went on to do some activities and play games to practice this skill.
